The Supreme Court on Friday rejected special counsel Jack Smith's request to immediately fast-track consideration of whether former President Trump is immune from prosecution in the federal 2020 election interference case. Why it matters: The high court's decision raises the possibility that his federal 2020 election trial stretches beyond the currently scheduled March 4 start date. Driving the news: The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will now first consider the immunity question, with oral arguments slated to begin on Jan. 9. The Supreme Court could then decide whether it will take up the case after the federal appeals court issues a ruling.
